Jigra (2024): Search for a brother-sister's end amid crisis
Jigra, released on 11 October 2024, is a Hindi language action thriller directed by Vasan Bala. Alia Bhatt plays the role of Satya, a powerful protagonist who is caught in a high-stakes mission to free her brother Ankur (acted by Vedang Raina) from a foreign jail, where she faces the death penalty for a crime she did not commit.
Narrative Evaluation
Based on the lifestyle of laughter - a fictional entire Indian island nation with strict laws - Jigra exposes the tales of truth, who walks on a dangerous path to save his brother. Ankur's wrong deeds, kept by his rich cousin Kabir (Aditya Nanda), push the truth into a world of danger and deceit. He along with a former mafia saragana (Manoj Paahava) and a former police officer (Rahul Raveendran) hatch a plan to escape from the jail. Inside the jail, Ankur fights with the criminal ward Hans Raj Laanda (Vivek Gombar) and forms a gang with fellow prisoners to escape.
Critical welcome
The film got a positive response from Mishri. The directors praised Bhatt's "dazzling" portrayal of Satya, which highlighted her ability to play the role of a determined sister. However, the review said that the dual storytelling reduced the tension in the film, which suggests that the film's calmer, more emotional scenes were more effective than its explosive scenes.
nyooja18 praised the film, rating it 4.5/5 and calling it "courageous" and "aggressive", praising both the director and actors for telling an engaging story. In contrast, Indian Express presented more critical views, rating the film 2/5 and commenting on the pacing and commerciality of the film.
Box office performance
Despite the strong performances, Jigra struggled commercially, earning ₹4.25 crores on its first day and earning more than ₹50 crores worldwide in its first two weeks, which made it a box office flop.
Music and Soundtrack
The music of the film, composed by Chint Thakkar and written by Varun Grover, along with songs, presents the original track and a new version of "Phoolon ka Taaron ka", which should be seen in the original form. Barman had composed the music. The soundtrack completes the film's emotional and romantic scenes, which enhance the story.
Canclusion
Jigra stands as a proof of how far a person can go for the sake of family, which is further enhanced by Alia Bhatt's captivating performance. Though the film's story structure received mixed criticism, its exploration of familial bonds amid difficult circumstances provides a poignant cinematic experience. For those who are eager to watch Jigra, the film has started streaming on Netflix from 6 December, 2024.
