"kingston" is a 2025 Indian Tamil fantasy horror adventure film directed by Kamal Prakash. The film is produced by G.V. Prakash Kumar, who is also playing lead roles along with Divya Bharati, Elango Kumaravel, Sabuman Abdulsamad and Chetan. Releasing on 7 March, 2025, "kingston" has attracted attention for its unique mixture of popular story, mystery and thrill.


Story Summary

Set in Thoothur, a small village in Thoothukudi district, the gang of the story king "king" roams around, who is a fisherman caught in the work of the workers. The main livelihood of the village, fishing, is in danger due to a disaster, due to which the fisherman disappears into the sea. Kingston learns that he has been deceived into a dragnet instead of a sea, and decides to face the ghosts himself, which leads to the discovery of the dark secrets of the universe.


Production and development

The official announcement of this project was made in October 2023 under the tentative title "Jee.Vee. 25", which is a 25th film starring Jee.Vee. Prakash Kumar in the lead role. The official title "Kingston" was revealed shortly after under the leadership of Kamal Prakash. The main photography began in October 2023, in which a significant portion was filmed on the set of a huge ship set up in Chennai. By January 2025, JV Prakash Kumar has completed his portion, and the dabbing process began in 2025.


Music and Soundtrack

The music and background score of the film is created by JV Prakash Kumar. Soundtrack includes singles like "Raasa Raasa", set to release on January 31, 2025, "Manda Baatharaam", set to release on February 15, 2025 and "Kingston Taital Traik", set to release on March 1, 2025.


Critical welcome

"Kingston" received mixed reviews from critics:


Hans India gave the film 3 out of 5 stars, praising its efforts to blend folklore, emotion and thrill, and highlighting its excellent cinematography and mundane storytelling.


Times of India gave it 2.5 out of 5 stars, noting that the film is enjoyable to watch, but its story struggles to present its complex mythological stories in an effective way.


India Today also gave 2.5 stars out of 5, accepted the importance of the film to find a hidden talent in Indian cinema, but also told that a lot was lacking in the execution.


Performance at the box office

In spite of the initial discussions, "Kingston" performed poorly at the box office, earning around ₹5.35 crores against the budget of ₹20 crores.


Conclusion

"Kingston" stands as a monumental effort in Tamil cinema, entering the realm of fictional horror adventure. While it shows commendable efforts in production design and music creation, the film's complex storyline and complex critical reception have influenced its overall success.
